The East Rutherford Police Department and East Rutherford Department of Public Works are striving to improve roadways for both traveling and parking. Many of the projects are being done, weather permitting, to improve the traffic flow and parking availability to all who use the roadways within the borough. These improvements and projects occur all year long but are occurring more during the warmer months.

Starting in 2018 the ERDPW began marking parking spaces on some of the roadways within the borough. This project has been a success and more roadways will be marked with designated parking spaces. This is being done throughout the borough in all areas as it is deemed to be needed in order to assist with parking problems. While nothing, at this point, is a total solution, this is a step in the right direction. Many roadways throughout the borough are currently being repaired and resurfaced. This will being an ongoing projects as it appears approximately twenty streets are due to be worked on over the next four to five years including 2018 and 2019. Patience and understanding is needed while the roadways are being worked on.

The East Rutherford Police Department and Borough Governing Body have enacted new ordinances to enforce the new parking laws within the borough. Where designated parking spaces are marked out, all vehicles needing to park on those streets shall parking within the marked spaces only. Only one vehicles shall  park in these marked spaces regardless of vehicle size or type. Failure to comply with these laws will result in a summons being issued to the vehicle(s) deemed to be in violation of the law(s). On all borough streets, please respect the driveways of the residences and business where you park and do not block these driveways. Be aware of fire hydrants, give ten feet on each side of the hydrant. Be aware of  other spaces deemed no parking areas either by signage or yellow curbing. Please do not park on crosswalks or within intersections. Please park at least twenty five feet from stop signs.

All motorists using the roadways within the borough, and elsewhere, need to be mindful of pedestrians and bicyclists. Please use caution and be alert for these parties using the roadways and know the laws governing the right of way on the roadways. A few extra seconds of caution can save a life and a lifetime of regret. Pedestrians in a crosswalk have the right of way and a motorist MUST YIELD and/or STOP for the pedestrian(s). Also, by now we all should know not to text and drive. It is against the law and can have devastating effects.

To all residents who have a driveway or access to a driveway at their place of residence, for usage, please use your driveway(s) for your family’s vehicle(s). This may help free up some street parking for residents who do not have this same access to a driveway at their place of residence, for usage. This courtesy will also assist the borough in some areas with limited on street parking. Also, any resident who knows of a marked handicapped parking space, which is no longer needed (resident has moved, etc), please contact the East Rutherford Police Department so these spaces can be removed. An evaluation of parking is always being done within the borough and all aspects of parking are being looked at. This is a constant project as conditions change and is done to improve the availability to legally park within the borough for both residents and visitors. The goal is to improve the overall situation for the many and not just the few. The process time. While there may not be a total solution to any problem (s), in some cases, the goals here are to assist and improve conditions where possible for as many as possible.
